Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: May 5, 2023

OUTLOOK  Freshet has kicked in. We saw a big rise on all of our Lower Mainland rivers, and we have also seen some flooding and road advisories in the Interior around Cache Creek. If you are heading that direction, make sure to check road conditions and closures. We have details on the Chilliwack and Squamish this week, but the general trend is rising water and limited opportunities.   Though most of the major freshwater opportunities in the Lower Mainland are affected by the rising water, we have heard good cutthroat reports this week from the sloughs and we are also hearing good bass reports with the increasing temperatures. We don’t have an update on the cutthroat this week, only to say that is well worth going…

OUTLOOK  Is Summer now coming? We have been waiting for spring weather to really kick in but, this weekend we are going to see almost summer level temperatures! This is good news for many of our fisheries but for others heat is a problem.   On the Chilliwack River, there are still opportunities to get out, but regulations change on the 1st. It closes above Vedder Crossing and goes fly only below.   On the Squamish, fishing was good this week, but we are seeing the first signs of freshet kicking in and with the heat this weekend we are not sure where it will go.   One area where the warm water is exciting is for interior lake fishing. This should accelerate ice offs and get the…

OUTLOOK  There is warmer dry weather incoming! Just not this weekend. It looks as though we will see another damp weekend, but the good news is next week, we will see clear skies and increasing temperatures. We might even see our first high teens weekend next week in Vancouver and 20s in the interior!   We have a number of updates on our Lower Mainland/Sea to Sky rivers where even though there was fairly heavy rain last weekend, the rivers didn’t move much because of cool temps and low snow levels. This made for some good steelheading, but less than ideal fry eater conditions. We heard some positive reports of cutthroat in the Fraser and other tributaries, but we are still not loving the bull trout…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: April 14, 2023

OUTLOOK  We have another spring storm rolling across the coast this weekend. It looks very similar to last week’s bump of water. Though there were challenging river levels and clarity issues last weekend, the fishing was excellent when you planned your day and picked areas of clear water. We expect similar results this week, so it is well worth planning some time on the water.   In the Freshwater report section, we talk about Fraser sturgeon, the Sea to Sky systems and the Chilliwack with details on how the storm last week affected things and where we expect it to go this weekend.   We are also hearing about more interior lake reports rolling in. Ice off is still behind schedule but there are some lower elevation…

OUTLOOK  The rain is here! The ice is coming off and we have a long weekend incoming!  Even though we would all love to see a nice sunny Easter weekend the rain is a good thing.  We will see a substantial dump this weekend up the Sea to Sky and out the valley with 50mm in both directions on Sunday.  We need the water but it comes with concerns of blow outs.  If the weatherman is correct, we expect good fishing Friday / Saturday and if high water comes Sunday / Monday when it settles, we should see some of the best conditions of the season.  We have more details on the Vedder and the Squamish in the freshwater report sections below and we are…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: March 31, 2023

OUTLOOK  It’s a big week in BC fishing. It’s new licence time so if you are heading out on the salt or freshwater make sure to get a new licence. It is all done online via the following links.     Get a BC Fishing Licence  Click here for Saltwater Fishing licences and here for a BC Freshwater Fishing Licence.   We also have some regulation updates and reminders in this week’s report.    Things change on the Chilliwack River on the 1st and we have all the details on that in the Freshwater Fishing Report Section below.  On the saltwater front, while we were hoping for pilot mark selective fishing opportunities in certain areas it doesn’t appear we will get those.  Fisheries notices went out this morning and…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: March 17, 2023

OUTLOOK  Spring is poking her head out! With temperatures hitting the low teens this weekend, we are excited to hopefully see the cold weather behind us. We are still dealing with low water levels on most of our river systems but the combination of the time of year and the warmer temperatures, should make this weekend worth heading out for.   This week, we have updates on the Squamish system where the fry are definitely out and the Chilliwack where we continue to hear solid steelhead reports.  If you haven’t heard yet, they have also started stocking some of our local lakes so be sure to check out that report as this is one of the easiest fisheries to have some fun and to get the…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: March 10, 2023

OUTLOOK  There is finally a warming trend COMING, or at least seasonal average temperatures for the next week. One thing we are not seeing is a substantial dump of rain. There are a few drizzles in the forecast but not enough to move river levels.   With the warmer weather, we will start looking for salmon fry in numbers soon. We heard reports of anglers seeing the odd fry all week, but we still need an extended period of warmth to really get them out in force. With that in mind, you will want to have a couple fry patterns in your box and small Colorado blades if float fishing.   This week, we have updates on the Chilliwack and Squamish systems. With the warmer weather, we have…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: March 3, 2023

OUTLOOK  First off, we wanted to start by thanking everyone who came out for our 2023 Stillwater Fly Tying Jam Session. It was amazing to see all the innovative lake patterns and we hope everyone who attended learned a thing or two. If you missed the event, or just want a little review of the patterns covered, we have an article at the end of the report on some of the highlighted flies, recipes and cool new materials. We also have a video on one of the flies that caught our eye. It is Eric’s Fritz Searching Damsel.  You can check that video out in the article as well if you want to sit down at the vice tonight.   On the fishing and weather front,…
