Pacific Angler’s Friday Fishing Report: May 16th, 2014

Outlook For many anglers, this is a very exciting time of year. Most of our spring fisheries have ended and our summer fisheries are starting to kick off! Warm summer weather from this past week has sent the rivers deeper into freshet and most likely past the point of return. Its time to get your boating on! This is prime time for our local lakes. If you are planning on fishing the Lower Mainland lakes, get out sooner than later. Once these lakes heat up from summer weather, the fishing becomes very slow until the fall. Interior lakes are only getting better. Lakes in the 3000ft range are still your best bet for the next week or so. The Hump and Bowen are still kicking…

Pacific Angler’s Friday Fishing Report: May 9th, 2014

Outlook It is that time of year again! Drift rods and two handed rods are being laid to rest and stillwater and saltwater gear is being dusted off. Interior lakes are icing off, turning over and the fishing is starting to heat up. Our lower mainland river systems are in full freshet bringing another steelhead season to a close. The coho salmon fishery on the Cap is just getting started now. If you are looking to do some freshwater fishing in the lower mainland, our local lakes are a great option- especially for introductory anglers. Chinook fishing is coming into prime time! The hump has been fishing well. The other side is also producing well from Nanaimo to Porlier. Be sure to check weather and…

Pacific Angler’s Friday Fishing Report April 25th, 2014

Outlook Well, if you’ve looked out the window at all in the last day or so you’ll be well aware that April showers have arrived! Local lakes have been fishing well, interior lakes are becoming more and more ice free, and fish are starting to feed. With the warmer temperatures starting to be more constant, we can expect the rivers to continue to rise and eventually colour up and blow out- as per usual this time of year with the Spring freshet starting to show itself. Rivers that were once steady and clear/greenish are starting to become muddy and cloudy with the sudden influx of water being flushed down the systems. Any tidally influenced river will be especially affected as the larger volume of fresh…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report April 18th, 2014

Outlook With the warm Spring temperatures finally showing themselves on a constant and steady basis, as expected, rivers are starting to come up. Warm weather, April showers, and inevitable snow-melt are all factors that play a key role in how long the rivers will hold their shape before blowing out. So far all the local rivers from the Sea-to-Sky corridor out to the Fraser Valley are starting to rise and colour up. Please be aware that on any day you are fishing a glacially affected river that the water can rise quickly and unexpectedly, and to exercise caution while wading.  Lots of the local lakes are consistently producing catch-able sized rainbows and cutthroat trout, as well as most of the lakes in the Whistler/Squamish area….

Pacific Angler’s Featured Spring Raft Trip!

SQUAMISH DRIFT – SPRING 2014! Each year we wait in anticipation for the month of April. This is the month that we drift the Squamish River with the expectation of catching a chrome steelhead and feisty bulltrout or rainbow’s feeding on fry. The Squamish is a magical river flanked by snow capped mountains and glistening glaciers with mountain goats gazing down from the cliffs above. As it drains the Squamish and Elaho Valley it forms numerous runs and pools that are ideally suited to fly fishing but equally exciting if you prefer tossing spinners or float fishing! Join the Pacific Angler Guides as they man the oars of the raft and guide you in search for bull trout, Dolly Varden, rainbow and the elusive but…

Friday Fishing Report: March 21st, 2014

Outlook: As the weather continues to be unstable so has the fishing.  This means that those of you that are able to put the time in on the water will eventually hit it right and have success.  As you can see below, the weather will be a little unsettled over the weekend but that the temperatures seem to be rising and stabilizing around that 12-13 C mark that Andre mentions further down in his report and how it relates to cutthroat fishing at this time of year. This is an extremely exciting time of year at Pacific Angler.  We can feel the energy levels lifting in the store from our customers as the expectations for steelhead fishing peaking in April and lake fishing is just…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: March 14th, 2014

Outlook: The temperatures are rising a bit now as we are closer to full spring weather.  Vancouver is expecting rain on the weekend with periods of heavy rain on Sat and Sun.  In the Squamish valley they are expecting some snowfall on Saturday but then it turns to a mix of sun/cloud as the temperatures here will begin to rise after Sunday as well getting into the 9-10deg range. In the Georgia Strait the winds to kick off the weekend are a mix of SE and SW in the 10-20knot range so by picking your spots you should be able to find some pockets of calmer waters and hopefully land a winter chinook, some crabs and prawns!  The fishing at “The Hump” off the south…

Friday Fishing Report: February 7th, 2014

Outlook: Well, on my phone today the weather app was showing a HIGH of -1 and LOW of -8. Suffice to say, I am won’t be walking a river over the next few days!  Those of you who are be sure to take your hand warmers and dress for the cold!!  Max was out fishing yesterday and got frostbite! Of course, this means that the higher you go (Squamish v.s. Vedder) the colder you will get.  Fish are being caught and one of our customers Dave, sent us this pic of a recent Vedder steelhead he caught after getting skunked on his first 5trips….persistence has paid off! Dave: I caught this steelhead on a large black intruder fly last week on the Vedder.  It put…

Friday Fishing Report: Jan 31st, 2014

Outlook: Ahhhhhh the wet Vancouver wonderland in all its glory.  Temperatures in the lower mainland will be hovering between freezing and 6-7deg over the next week with POP consistently in the 90% range.  Saturday in Squamish looks like the best day which I am sure all 10 of our students in Aaron Goodis’s Spey course will be grateful for! Sunday, for any of you mutual Hawk watchers should be a “weather be damned” day as we watch the HAWKS run those Bronco’s out of Metlife Stadium in the Superbowl. GO HAWKS!! The Georgia St. marine forecast remains light to mid winds (5 to 15knot winds) for this coming weekend  so it looks good to get out on the water even though the sunshine may not…
