Steelhead Fly Tying 101 with Ron Hjorth

In this course expert fly tier Ron Hjorth will show students how to tie a steelhead tube fly, how to tie steelhead flies intruder style on Waddington shanks, and how to tie a classic steelhead fly. With these three styles you will have the ability to tie effective steelhead patterns from low water wets for summer runs to big intruders for winter runs.

Introduction to Fly Fishing Course with Jason Tonelli

This popular course is an excellent way to get started in fly fishing and to learn how to, when to, and where to when it comes to fly fishing for trout, salmon, and steelhead in the Lower Mainland.

Introduction to Fly Tying Class with Ron Hjorth

This beginner course consists of 4 sessions of 3 hours each. We will cover vise and tool selection as well as the necessary materials and hooks needed to tie popular and effective BC trout patterns. This course isdesigned to give you a strong foundation to base your tying and pattern selection from. You will learn how to tie dries, streamers, nymphs, chironomids, and attractors.

 

Included in the price of the course is a fly tying manual which describes the materials, tools and basic techniques of fly tying. It covers 290 patterns in all, each with a color photo showing the pattern, a materials list and basic tying instructions with step by step instructions and color photos on how to tie all the major styles of flies.

 

Space is limited to 8 students.

Spey Casting Course with Dana Sturn and Jason Tonelli

An introduction to the art of spey fishing, two handed casting, and spey casts for single and double handed rods. In this two part course we will cover all aspects of this growing and productive technique used for steelhead and salmon.The first part of this course will be a 3 hour introduction to rods, reels, lines, proper outfit set up and balancing, custom sink tips, custom heads, and leaders. We will cover what set ups are used for the different applications and fisheries, the reasons behind this. In short you will understand what rods and lines you need for your style of fishing, no more guess work.

 

The second part of the course is a full day (8 hours) on the water instruction where we will cover all of the major casts needed to fish on each side of the river with a variety of wind conditions. We will use casts such as the double spey, single spey, Snap–T or, Circle C or Snake Roll, off shoulder casts, and newer Skagit techniques like the Perry Poke. Fishing techniques and strategies will also be discussed and demonstrated on the water.

 

Students should bring their own rod, reels, and lines to the casting portion and there will be some set ups from a variety of manufactures to try as well.
