Big_ Fish_ On_ a _Sedge_ Pattern

OUTLOOK  Welcome to July and a happy belated Canada Day!  The BIG NEWS this week is the Public Fishery Alliance’s announcement of an information rally to support a recovery plan for chinook stocks of concern and the mass marking of all chinook salmon!   The PFA rally is on Monday July 6th from 12:00pm to 1:30pm outside of the DFO Offices in downtown Vancouver at 401 Burrard Street (corner of Burrard and W. Hastings).  Click here for more information and we’ll see you there – with our masks on!  On the fishing side of things, a number of fisheries are now open.  We have updates on the Skagit with water level pictures from opening day as well as the Vedder/Chilliwack outlook below.   We have a couple reports from Lake Country this week.  Brian Chan tuned in with a great overview as well as a couple cool little tips to help you if you are heading out.  Sterling has been putting in a bunch of time up in…

OUTLOOK  Last week we asked some hard questions of the fisheries minister and this week she gave an answer.  An answer that utterly disregards science, proper conservation, and common sense. We won’t go into too much detail here but if you missed our full response sent out last weekend, be sure to read that here.  Matt goes over some of the regulations in the video report along with a good dose of ranting over the whole mishandling of the fishery.  Jason gives a clear overview of the issues as well as an in-depth look at the regulations.   On a lighter note, we have updates on the Sea To Sky Lakes as well as the interior lakes.  Matt is back with his famous Skagit River outlook where he goes into detail on what to expect opening day and Zach has a cool chironomid fly that uses a new flat wire that really helps keep down bulk on your nymph and chironomid patterns.   For those…

2020 Chinook Measures – Our Response

As many of you know, I have taken it upon myself to be involved in the management of our public fisheries as best I can.  I am currently a Director at the Sport Fishing Institute of BC, I am President of the Vancouver Sport Fishing Guides Association, and I am Chair of the Lower Fraser Valley Sport Fish Advisory Committee which is part of the Sport Fish Advisory Board process to DFO.  At this time, I am taking all those hats off and writing to you as a fellow Canadian who is deeply concerned by the DFO 2020 fisheries management measures to protect Fraser chinook, announced yesterday afternoon.  These are my views and mine alone, and it is time someone said something, because enough is…

OUTLOOK Summer is almost here and though the weather forecast for the weekend has changed and doesn’t look as good around Vancouver as we expected, the 14-day trend has warmer weather coming early next week. The interior also looks warmer and we expect good fishing this weekend. We had a comment in the video version of the report last week asking for some more details on the local freshwater scene and Alex has a piece going over the general opportunities you can expect as things warm up in the summer. Thanks for the questions keep them coming!   For those in the interior Brendan has the latest from his trip up that way yesterday. We have a Capilano update and though this fishery is always a challenge…

OUTLOOK  Spring is almost over but summer isn’t nipping at her heels.  Again, we are going to see a mixed bag of weather with rain, cloud and a bit of sun right across the province.  This has put the lake fishing off a bit and the reports from the interior this week have been mixed.  The team was out on different lakes throughout the week so check out the lake reports below including the one from Brian Chan.  Saltwater fishing was solid this past week and though there might be clouds and some showers in the forecast, the winds don’t look bad and the tides are good.  Jason will have more info on what to expect on the saltwater front in this week at the end of the report.   On another front, we know that many of you lake fisherman enjoy a shore lunch or a fish or two for the…

OUTLOOK Welcome to June everyone! Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t look all that “June” like. We are going to see unsettled cooler weather right into next week.  This means unsettled fishing in the Interior and a little wind in the forecast for the saltwater guys.  This week, we have a Kane Valley report from Brendan where he hit some interesting weather.  For the last two weeks he has been having awesome fishing but, this week, the weather made things a challenge.  He has some tips for how to deal with unsettled weather and he still managed some nice fish.   Continuing with the lake fishing, Zach has a video and recipe for the chironomid that was producing on his interior lake trip last week.   On the river front, we have a Capilano update as well as a sturgeon fishing from shore piece from Alex. This is an interesting one that you can do on the Lower Fraser at almost any time…

OUTLOOK We are at the end of May and things continue to move in the right direction both on the world front and the fishing front. Though it has been a slightly cooler than average this past month, fishing is ramping up.  As we look to June we are hearing of more things are starting to open in terms of access and operators including our own saltwater charter operation that we are hoping to open up in early June.  If you’re thinking of a trip don’t hesitate to call us on the charter line (778.788.8582) and we can chat dates!    This week we have a great lake fishing update from both the Squamish direction and the interior as Jason was up that way taking…

OUTLOOK The long weekend is coming and with the world focused on easing restrictions in a socially responsible manner we have a number of fisheries worth looking at. Many parks have opened up to day use in the last 24 hours  there are still a number that remain closed and along with that some fishing access points. We expect more openings to come but it wasn’t a blanket opening so be sure to check specific parks open and access information here http://bcparks.ca/covid-19/ before heading out On the fishing front we have got some information on local lakes, some news on very good salmon fishing out in the salt as well as an update on the Capilano River opening for salmon fishing.
