Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: January 6, 2017

OUTLOOK Holy cow it’s cold! We are having one of the coldest winters on record and it doesn’t look to be changing soon. We are all looking very closely at the 14-day forecasts and there is hope in sight. Out of the next seven days the best fishing days look to be this weekend. It will be cold with possible snow but it won’t be too cold. Steelhead will bite in cold weather, especially if they are fresh, so heading to the Vedder this weekend is not a bad idea. Cold days have very little effect on winter chinook fishing as long as the wind doesn’t pose a problem. There has been some wind so keep your eye on the marine forecast. We have had…

OUTLOOK 2016 is almost over and we are looking forward to 2017. We had a great year at the shop. The weather was interesting for our boxing week sale but lots of guys braved the snowstorm and got great deals. On a whole, weather was interesting for the entire year. We had a cooler summer and a very wet fall. This hampered some of the salmon river fishing and chinook fishing out in the harbour was admittedly nothing to write home about. That said there were some moments of great fishing. We had a record chum return and lots of anglers had fun pulling on chum on the Squamish and Fraser Valley rivers. It was nice to see that jigs became the go to method…

OUTLOOK The arctic outflow warning is still in effect but there is hope on the horizon. Things will warm up Sunday and continue into early next week. The warming trend will come with some snow and rain but not too much and with the rivers low and clear this will also be a good thing. It still won’t be warm by some people’s standards but it will be within season norms and this should help fishing on all fronts. If it gets into the 5-8 degree range and we don’t see too much precipitation fish should be very good! If you have some time off over the holidays the Squamish, Stave and Harrison should be good to look at if you want to fish for…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: December 9, 2016

OUTLOOK Christmas season is upon us and so is the cold! All the rivers are dropping like a rock and even the Harrison may be fishable after a long season of high waters! Cold, clear days are fun if you are prepared for the weather and the fishing conditions.  Fish are getting picky but if you use fluorocarbon, less obtrusive presentations and fish a little slower than normal you can have some excellent river fishing this time of year. If you’re headed out to the Squamish we have some cold weather tactics for the bull trout fisherman in this week’s. If you’d prefer to hit the water in the valley, the Stave and even the Harrison might have some egging opportunities as well. The Vedder…

OUTLOOK Things are getting cold! It may be a little late for river salmon season but the mix of rain and cold weather is great for egg fishing for bull trout. We have had a number of great reports this week and though we have been on a constant weather watch for blown out rivers, anglers have been finding fish. The salmon fishing in the Vedder is almost completely over. We had some good bull trout reports and we are eagerly awaiting reports of steelhead, which should be coming soon. Check out Alex’s Vedder report for more details. When the weather has cooperated, winter spring fishing has been great. Don’t miss Jay’s write up at the end of the report. He had an excellent day…

OUTLOOK We have spent a ton of time looking at the long term forecast over the last few days. We have focused on the long term because the short term forecasts have been downright depressing. Rain and wind hammered the coast all week and the rivers are very unstable. The positive news is that the long range forecast is looking good because it is getting cold. The unsettled weather is tapering off this weekend. Once again it’s hard to call if the improving weather will be enough to make this weekend good for fishing but if everything goes to plan hope is in sight. Cold weather my not be the best to fish in but cold weather is what we need to clear up the…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: November 18, 2016

OUTLOOK On the river front we have had no end of challenges this season but on the saltwater front winter chinook is picking up and prawning has been very good. If you haven’t put your boat away for the winter, fire up the engines, drop the traps and see what’s out there. If you can pick the right weather it is worth the effort.  On the freshwater side of things, the Vedder is slowing down for salmon but steelhead are just around the corner. The Harrison has been a tough one. It should be fishing well this time of year but challenging river levels and warm weather have left us with very few options to hike and fish. The Squamish has had moments of brilliance…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: November 11, 2016

OUTLOOK The rivers are coming down but it is a slow process.  With more rain in the forecast it is hard to tell what will happen.  Squamish hit flood levels earlier in the week and was absolutely unfishable. Scary might be a better word to describe it. Logs and trees were coming down the river and it will be interesting to see how the river has changed after the high water. Anyone drifting should be very careful and be on their toes for new log jams. The river is still coming down and we expect some fishable water this weekend but we expect it to be high. If you’re headed out have fun and be safe. The Vedder is in a fishable condition but fishing has…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: November 4, 2016

OUTLOOK Who is doing the weather reports lately? Every week I keep seeing 50+ mm reports and though we have seen a ton of rain the weatherman has been off as often as he has got it right. It has made it very hard to predict when to fish. With reports being all over the map we have been out when the rain was supposedly not going to be an issue only to find flood conditions and the exact same week cancelled outings because of forecasted floods, only to find that rivers have been in shape. Welcome to fall salmon fishing. Our best advice, is to watch river levels, watch weather patterns, then as long as things are safe, go fishing. Even when conditions have…

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: October 28, 2016

OUTLOOK We have had a very wet October but the weatherman has over estimated a number of the storms. Rivers have been blown out but the amount of rain has not been off the charts and though conditions have not been perfect they have been fishable. Matt, Alex and Luis hit the Squamish on Tuesday and expected it to be unfishable because of high water. They were pleasantly surprised and managed to get into some decent spots that were sheltered from the high water. Check out Matt’s Squamish River Fishing Report for more details. The graph numbers and weather forecast on Tuesday will be a good bar to base future trips. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with lots of chum hitting the Fraser. Sam has…
