Pacific Angler Saltwater Salmon Series: Chinook Trolling Tactics - Our Complete Summer Chinook Fishing System

Summer chinook season is one of the highlights of the saltwater fishing calendar, but consistently finding success often comes down to paying attention to the details. From fishing the right depths and trolling the correct speed to selecting the right flasher and hoochie combination, every part of your setup plays a role.

In the latest episode of the Pacific Angler Saltwater Salmon Series, we break down the complete chinook trolling system we use on our guide boats throughout the summer season.

We start by covering the ideal rod, reel and line setup for fishing deep water, including why we've switched to braided mainline and how a mono top shot helps improve performance with downrigger release clips. We also discuss our preferred terminal tackle setup and how it helps eliminate line twist while fishing 150 to 300 feet down.

From there, we dive into one of the biggest keys to successful chinook fishing - presentation. We walk through our favourite glow flashers, explain when we choose bright chartreuse patterns versus darker black and blue combinations, and share the hoochie colours that consistently produce fish on our guide boats. You'll also learn about leader lengths, trolling speeds, and how we use sonar to dial in productive depths.

Finally, we cover some of the small details that often make the biggest difference, including charging your glow gear with a UV light, adding scent to your presentation, checking leaders and hooks after every fish, and making adjustments throughout the day based on changing conditions.

Of course, no tactics video would be complete without putting everything into practice. We hit the water in the Strait of Georgia and show these techniques in action, with plenty of exciting chinook encounters along the way.

Whether you're preparing for your first summer chinook trip or looking to fine-tune your trolling program, this episode is packed with practical tips that will help you fish more effectively.
