We had an awesome August and with rivers hitting perfect levels, lake country cooling off, Fraser salmon moving through the bay and the Skeena reporting amazing numbers we are looking forward to the fishing this month. Last weekend we hosted the first annual Labor Day Chinook Classic and the event was a huge successes. We will admit that after day one we were thinking about re naming the weekend the Labor Day Chinook Challenge because 30 minuets before the opening gunshot a pod of killer whales moved through the harbor. Pacific Angler Outlook Wow, August flew by fast! It was a great month for fishing across the Lower Mainland. With great runs of salmon in the saltwater and Fraser River, great trout fishing when the water finally dropped on the Skagit and Thompson,  and stunning early numbers from the Skeena Watershed, we are eagerly awaiting September. Pacific Angler Outlook: When things are slow it can be tough to write this report but this week we are having no problem finding great reports. Fisheries have been producing well across the province.  Primarily the local saltwater fisheries for Chinook and coho salmon and river fisheries for Chinook and trout have been producing best. Ocean fishing was, for a better word “on fire” with Chinook coming through in big waves. This is peak migration time for this fishery and we have heard lots of big fish staging off the mouth of the Fraser River.  Things were a bit slower over the past couple of days but we expect the fishing will turn on again when another wave of Chinooks shows up off the mouth…

It looks like we are in for another great week of weather with temperatures in the low 20s. Fishing has been solid on a number of systems and we are seeing better fishing in the salt chuck. Things just picked up off Bell Buoy, Spanish Banks and towards the mouth of the Fraser for Chinook. We expect this fishery to improve over the next 2 weeks and last well into September. British Columbia is still recovering from an above average snow pack and a nonexistent spring.  However, there are a few fisheries benefitting from a late summer.  The Pacific Angler staff is expecting August to be a great month to be on the water. Pacific Angler Outlook:  Welcome to the Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report.  It is hard to believe we are already at the very end of July and looking straight down the barrel of August.  For the fisherman August is a great month to spend time on the water.  While lake fishing for the most part slows down, river fishing for trout and salmon and fishing in the saltwater for salmon really picks up. Vancouver and the interior has seen another warm week.  This has caused lake fishing to slow down with fish now holding in the deeper water. The relatively hot temperatures for the last 2 weeks have slowed down the lake fishing across the province. While the heat has helped river levels drop (by melting snowpack) we are not at optimal levels for the majority of rivers within the lower mainland.  Never fear, many great fishing opportunities are still abound and many more are just around the corner. Pacific Angler Outlook Grab your sunglasses, sunscreen and fishing rods! Another awesome week of weather is coming! Temperatures are going to creep up to mid 20s in Vancouver, and jump into the 30s up in Kamloops! Check out the Vancouver and Kamloops forecasts. With the warm weather, local coastal rivers affected by snowmelt have risen over the past week. I expect the systems affected by snowmelt will level off over the next week and then drop back into shape by the end of July or beginning of August. Fishing in “Lake Country” this weekend should still produce some good results.
